A Message From the Parent Council
Gilroy
Catholic College Council….
I can’t
believe how fast this term is going; already almost half way through the final
term for 2014. I wanted to remind you of the upcoming Parent Forum for Term 4 on
Wednesday 12th November in the College Staffroom at 7.30pm
(refreshments will be available from 7.15pm). Due to a change in Jason’s
circumstances he is no longer able to speak at this forum. Fortunately, Senior
Constable Hart has kindly stepped in to take Jason’s place and talk to us about
safe partying. As this time of year is popular for holding celebrations to mark
the end of the school year, I feel that there may be some valuable information
in this presentation, which may assist you and your children in holding a safe
and successful event.
Following
the presentation we will hold the AGM for 2014. This final Parent Forum is an
opportunity for you to provide us with constructive feedback about this year’s
Forums and social events, as well as suggestions for next year, so that we can
plan appropriately. We welcome your opinions and suggestions so that we can better
meet the needs of you and your children at Gilroy.
Regards
Natasha

LEADERS 2015 Year 11
In life, we get
opportunities. These opportunities can only be achieved with hard work,
perseverance and sheer blessings. For sixteen Year 10 students this year, the
hard work has paid off. Recently, the leaders have been chosen from the many
applicants who applied for the position to be the voice of the school. The
process was extremely hard, especially having to pick only 16 from the 35
applicants who all deserved to lead the school.
The leadership
team is very honoured and all feel very blessed with this opportunity to make a
difference in the school. “I’m ecstatic- cannot wait to learn leadership skills
and be a positive role model.” Liam
Ferreira. The leadership team has already attended 2 meetings with Ms Stock
and Ms Bell as well as the current year 11 leaders and haven’t wasted any time
by starting to brainstorm new ideas straight away. “I feel phantastic!” Vy Phan.
The team has
their leadership retreat in week 8 where they will further develop their skills
as leaders and how to be a role model. They also have the National
Young Leaders Day to attend in Week 7. The team will be the 2015 Year 7
homeroom leaders next year. They will guide and assist them to adapt and feel
comfortable with the same kindness the past leaders have shown to us when we
started at Gilroy.
Every year, the standard that the new leadership teams
deliver is raised higher and higher, so the expectations for the new Year 10
leaders is very high! “We are all so blessed to be the voice of our school and
we look forward to the challenges ahead that we will be faced with!” Jasmine Kassis
The leaders this year include Lauren Chapman, Tahlia
Silcock, Jasmine Kassis, Christen Steward, Vy Phan, Madison Poynter, Emma
Maloney, Leah Church, Liam Ferreira, Liam Cole, James Arico, Zac Atkins, Andrew Regoli, Anthony Capetta, Aaron
Green and Kurtis Somerville.
We wish the team
the best of luck and know that they are going to achieve incredible things for
Gilroy and make a difference in the wider community.

Sports Report
Hills Zone Triathlon
On Friday the 24th of October,
the Hills Zone Triathlon was held at the famous Penrith Regatta Centre, once
used by many great athletes during the 2000 Olympics. A willing group of Gilroy
students signed up for the event. Some experienced and ready to go, some unaware
of the daunting event that lay before them. The distance of each race was
determined by age:
Juniors
– 200m swim, 5km Bike
ride, 2km run
Intermediates – 300m swim, 10km bike ride, 3km run
Seniors
– 400m swim, 15km bike
ride, 4km run
The day was moody; it started off
raining, then suddenly burst into a hot, dry scorcher! The weather may have
been hot but Gilroy was on fire, with three people placing in the top 3 and
advancing to the next stage!

Ballerina in the Making...
Belle Urwin is
13 years old and has been accepted into The Australian Ballet in Melbourne.
Belle started ballet when she was four years old. At the age of nine, Belle
auditioned for level one and got in as inter state students, which involved
intensive training for a week in Melbourne to get selected into level two. Due
to Belle’s age, she repeated level three. At the end of Belle’s level three,
she was one of thirteen girls that were asked to perform at the final week. From
the finals, they choose five girls to move to Melbourne in 2015. Belle was one
of the lucky and talented girls to be selected. Bella stated, “I am very
excited about the opportunity but I am scared and nervous, as I am moving
without my parents and could possibly be in Melbourne until Year 12.”
Belle will be
living with another girl who was accepted into the Australian Ballet and they
will be attending Victorian College of Arts. The Victorian College of Arts is
committed to providing a deep learning experience in pursuit of excellence,
innovation and a captivating education. The Victorian College of Arts consists
of artists of all sorts, such as contemporary artists and writers,
choreographers, musicians, designers, performers, actors, filmmakers, dancers
and many more, all committed to the production of new artistic work. Gilroy
Catholic College would like to send our best wishes to Belle Urwin with her
admirable and outstanding achievements within ballet.

CONCERT
BAND AND CHOIR
“Research has consistently
shown that students participating in instrumental or choral music learning
experiences are more engaged in their schooling, are capable of greater focus,
possess better memories and improved language abilities, and have a deeper
understanding of their emotional selves. They also achieve better results than
their non-musician counterparts across the academic spectrum.”
From
The Scots College advertisement.
Gilroy Catholic College also
fosters and supports the learning of instruments, including voice, for young
people.
The Concert Band consists of a
large variety of instruments playing a large variety of music with universal
appeal.
Students of all instruments
and levels are encouraged to attend as the charts provide standards to suit the
player.
Parents, please encourage your
child to participate in the weekly Band rehearsals, which prepare music for
performances at assemblies and special occasions.
For the remainder of 2014,
rehearsals take place after school on Tuesdays from 3.30-4.30pm.
